Reel roots of the financial crisis

John Wayne:

“All the real motion picture people have always made family pictures. But the downbeats and the so-called intelligentsia got in when the government stupidly split up the production companies and the theaters. The old giants – Mayer, Thalberg, even Harry Cohn, despite the fact that personally I couldn't stand him – were good for this industry. Now the goddamned stock manipulators have taken over. They don't know a goddamned thing about making movies. They make something dirty, and it makes money, and they say, ‘Jesus, let's make one a little dirtier, maybe it'll make more money.’ And now even the bankers are getting their noses into it.”

Atul Gawande on Health Care

So here, along the banks of the Rio Grande, in the Square Dance Capital of the World, a medical community came to treat patients the way subprime-mortgage lenders treated home buyers: as profit centers.

Super Willy. Super bad.

My pal Troy’s just back from Mexico, and he supplied me with these photos. How great are these? So great that they put their logo and slogan on there twice, real close together. The cheapest. I always knew I was a good value.

PB or J

Had a fun conversation with a new friend at a holiday party last weekend. We were discussing the general economic anxiety and how, if it gets to a certain point, we’ll all just have to eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for dinner.

And if it get even worser than than, well, we’ll have to downgrade to peanut butter or jelly sandwiches.

PB or J.

Thanksgiving

image

Thanksgiving has always been my favorite holiday. I love the idea of a purely secular holiday that is all about expressing and broadcasting a general and somewhat unspecified sense of thanks and that is utterly unrelated to any kind of comsumerly impulse. Except for consuming food, that is, and that we do with gusto. More photos of our dinner follow…
